June 22, 2018: Kelson Group has been in the property management business since 1974 and in recent years has added Property Developer to its repertoire. A ground breaking ceremony at The Reach at Thompson Rivers University marked the start of construction of a spectacular project in Kelson Group’s own backyard, solidifying the company’s legacy in the industry and in the Kamloops community.

“We are thrilled to officially break ground on our newest project, Legacy Square,” said Ron Fawcett, founder and President of Kelson Group. “This is a unique partnership for us to be building a project at TRU. We saw the vision the team at Thompson Rivers University Community Trust had for a 90-acre master planned development and put forth our development proposal. Today signifies an exciting new chapter for our Kamloops-based company because we know well how important our university is to this community and look forward to being a part of its continued success.”

Legacy Square, Kelson Group’s 77 suite development, will be a 5-storey multi-family rental located on the North side of TRU’s Old Main building. Construction will start immediately and the company’s goal is to welcome its first residents in late 2019. “Today we have taken another step forward toward creating a vibrant campus where people not only learn and work, but where they can live 24/7,” said Alan Shaver, TRU’s President and Vice-Chancellor. “Additionally, this project is already benefitting our university through $1.8 million received from the long-term land lease, money which will support student bursaries, scholarships and research activities well into the future.”

TRU Community Trust Board Chair, Brian Ross stated, “Having a second building in the ground gives The Reach great momentum and credibility in the development industry. This new partnership with Kelson Group has enabled the Trust to return our profits to support TRU students and university initiatives. It is our goal to help TRU realize their campus master plan through responsible development.”
“The Reach’s vision to offer a new walkable community for Kamloops, enrich the TRU campus, and return funds to support university initiatives, aligns well with our company’s values,” said Jason Fawcett, Vice President of Operations for Kelson Group. “TRU is an important part of Kamloops and we are excited to have the opportunity to contribute to its growth by developing Legacy Square, our beautiful new rental building in the heart of the TRU campus.”

“Kelson Group is deeply rooted in Kamloops and continually invests in projects that will help enrich our city. They are the perfect partner to help The Reach become the best new and emerging urban lifestyle centre in Canada,” said Finlay Sinclair, CEO of the TRU Community Trust.  “I believe we all want to leave a legacy and Legacy Square is our opportunity as a company to do just that,” said Ron Fawcett. “We are delighted to be partnering with a university we appreciate and respect in a community we love and cherish. This is the start of building a great legacy together.”

A new website has just been launched for Legacy Square at www.legacysquare.ca. Future residents and interested parties are encouraged to visit the website and sign up to receive project updates via email.
